Clarice didn’t care that there apparently weren’t mutants in this world; what she did care about, was hiding the fact that she was different. She was under no illusion that if people saw her pointed ears, the welcoming smiles would change. The color of her eyes was from colored contact lenses, her hair was just the latest trend of dying hair and she had unfortunate birth marks. The explanation fit easily and people seemed to buy it.

It took a few days of just hanging out at the beach and walking around for the relaxation to finally kick in. Clarice could say that she was more relaxed than she’d ever been in her life. The Madonna Inn was different, people were used to odd so she didn’t count that time. After the fourth day, Clarice tried her powers in her hotel room and when the pillow returned whole ten out of ten times she portaled into the shower. She never was so happy to get her powers back because this time it was on her own and not anyone screwing with her head.

It was so tempting to use her powers to go down to the village but she’d learned her lesson the time she’d portaled into a what she thought was a deserted beach. She’d been caught on cell phone video but luckily it was too far away to see anything besides a pink flash and a fuzzy image by the rocks. And, only the tabloids had picked it up. The ‘serious’ news agencies had ignored it. So, instead she grabbed her sunglasses to wear with a cute white outfit with a straw hat, so if the wind did blow, it wouldn’t take strands of her hair that covered her ears.
